Gotta live my life to get boots like these

It's been a while since I posted. Not for lack of anything to say, that's for sure.

The title of this post is about two things I want to share - one is that my Sporto boots are totally waterproof. It's 37 degrees after about 2 feet of snowfall here, so the sidewalks are like lakes. But my feet are dry!

The other is that I'm enamored with Ben Harper and the Relentless 7's album White Lies for Dark Times, which has a song "Boots Like These" that has been stuck in my head since I got the CD. I love rock & roll music. This is a rock & roll album. I like a lot of Ben Harper's music and most of the musicians he's recorded with, but this is my bag right here. Visit the website for unlimited listening to the full albums!

I also have been considering reshaping the blog somewhat - perhaps to "A Thoroughly Modern Mommy." But of course, some other people thought of this first. First there's Thoroughly Modern Mommy (think mommy blogger meets The Onion). Also see Thoroughly Modern Momma - mom and musician's wife who seems to have a sense of humor about her Christiantasticness or whatever you call that.

I just think the whole "adventures in/of" is played out. It was played out when I started, but it was my first blog, so I didn't know.

Oh well, right now I'm working on a little thing called "Get off the internet and work." Wish me luck.

Scrap room purgatory

Three days removed from scrapbook hell, and 11 hours of moving, sorting and dusting later, I find myself in scrapbook room purgatory. It's not heaven, it's not hell. It could go either way. There are still some key elements that haven't found a home in the room yet (namely my bins of actual "scraps" to scrapbook) and I haven't made a page yet, so I have no idea if I'm going to be able to pull out a piece of card stock without the whole mess falling on the cat.

But I don't get the sensation of rolling anything uphill all day long when I come in here, so it must be time well spent.

Oh, and my cameras have a real home! Right next to the books I need to read... I swear sometimes projects like this turn up more to-do list items than actually resolve any problems. For example, I overheated the shredder 3 times after cleaning out the filing cabinet. Poor innocent shredder.

I've also been listening to music - I try to make a point of doing this so that Deuce doesn't grow up in a world of only "Rubber Ducky, You're the One." I borrowed Snow Patrol and Jack Johnson (Sleep Through the Static - who knew he had released another album?), and when those wore out I switched over to last.fm. I was a huge fan of the now-defunct Pandora, and last is even better because you have unlimited skips!

So that was my day. More to do, but that's what gets us up in the morning, right?

Strangers. Waitin'. Up and down the boulevard.

My BFF knows all of my vices, and Journey's greatest hits is certainly one. She lent me her CD (I only had the tape and that's long gone) for my listening pleasure. I took the opportunity to sing super loud when I was in the car by myself going to Jazz and back.

Hidin'. Somewhere in the NIGHT!

It ain't pretty.

My quest to learn knitting continues. I started in on Seaside Diagonale, which is labeled Knit - Intermediate. I can see that there are some areas that need improvement, namely the edges. They don't look neat and tidy like knit edges should. To that end, I checked SnB out of the library since Happy Hooker really improved by crochet understanding. I really love Debbie Stoller and as soon as I'm gainfully employed again, I'm going to add SnB to the library.

My quest to crochet continues (as soon as I have jammies on) because I think I only have about 30 rows left on DeuceDad's SU blanket!! I have to seam the pieces together and choose an edge (maybe just sc since it's supposed to be manly), but I'm so happy to be almost done with hundreds of rows of sc!

It feels good when you sing a song

A strange thing happened to my feed burner. I added Club Trillion to it. I'm sure my (few) readers are not raving college basketball fans and are not tremendously interested in a college kid expounding on the trials of being a poor player on a great team. But this shit is good. And I just had to say something about it because I got all excited when I saw there was an update. AND he calls out Stuff White People Like, which is off color, but hysterically funny to me. In fact, it was on my blogroll, but I decided it was a little off the topic of parenting, and so it was removed.

Meantime, Deuce and I got out for a much-needed play date today that ended in me dragging his crying ass out the front door of my friend's house. Her 2 year old didn't nap yesterday and Deuce is teething. Apparently in toddler math this ends in fighting over DJ from Cars and crying. I need to get this kid back in day care. Before I know it he'll be 39 and going on movie dates with his mommy (I have an uncle who, until recently acquiring a girlfriend, did just that. It runs in the family).

So there's DeuceMotherhood today. Reading sports blogs and failed play dates. G-l-a-m-o-r-o-u-s.

Bonus: Want dance around the living room with your son looking at you like a loon? Play this one for him.

Every Mothers' Son

Driving my dad's truck
The tape player plays classics
Glad we're close again.

We're borrowing my dad's truck and trailer in case everything doesn't fit in the truck this weekend (we got the 26'-er, it might be close). I got in and the tape deck was playing Lynyrd Skynyrd - a tape recording of the vinyl of "A Second Helping" and "Gimme Back My Bullets." The tape picked up at "Every Mother's Son." I can sing along with a lot of Lynyrd Skynyrd songs, but "Every Mother's Son" is one I actually like.

B-sides of classic rock albums always make me think of my dad. When I was a toddler, we called the radio the "boogie" and I loved when he would turn the music up and sing. Just blasting down the road in a pickup... good times.

I'm so happy to be living near my parents. Not just for the vinyl either.

(I swear I'll do the button again as soon as I have my computer back)

Babies Rock

"Breakfast Highchair" by Stone Temple Pilots
(To the tune of "Dead & Bloated")

I am smellin' like the O's
that somebody gave me
in my breakfast highchair
I am smellin' like the O's
that somebody gave me
'cause I love Cheerios.

Ohh yeah, babies love to eat O's
I feel I've come of age
When I can feed myself.
Ohh yeah, babies love to eat O's
I feel I've come of age
When I use my sippy cup.

You can't swallow two O's at once
You can't swallow a fistful of O's

I am covered in juice
'cause I shake my cup
and spray juice all over.

I eat my O's thinkin' 'bout bananas, thinkin' 'bout bananas
I eat my O's thinkin' 'bout bananas, thinkin' 'bout bananas

DeuceDad and I love to change song lyrics to be about Deuce, but I think this was actually worth sharing. There is a series called Rockabye Baby! (my favorite cover is the Rolling Stones one with the binkies in the lips). These are soothing lullaby versions of rock bands songs. Our little hobby is slightly different in that we change the lyrics. Good clean fun!

B.D. Before Deuce

There are times when I remember my childless life fondly. I hate to admit that, but it's true. When I was working, it was every Friday after work. Friday night was my favorite night to go to happy hour and then wherever the night took me. Never anywhere wild or crazy, but out to dinner with friends, carefree.

Of course, within 5 minutes of leaving work I was at day care picking him up and once I had him in my arms I forgot all about dinner and drinks and was just as carefree knowing all night we could snuggle and play.

So this evening we went to DeuceDad's archery banquet and saw actual adults on a Saturday night. Crazy, I know. We came home, and I put on pj's and settled in the office with the year 1 scrapbook and Yahoo Radio on the coffee house station since we have no radio reception in our house. And this Ben Harper song came on that made me want to have a beer buzz and dance and chill and, well, do stuff. Slowly. With the music on. Like we used to before Deuce. Check it out - go to Ben Harper's website, click on BHIC Radio - "In The Colors."

Maybe I'm crazy. And I would never trade life with Deuce for the Deuceless life. But there are moments when I really look forward to him sleeping over at Grandma's.

"Here comes your 19th nervous breakdown"

I have this habit of hearing phrases and then getting songs stuck in my head. Today, someone at work was suggesting that I "break down" a software design diagram and then use "your breakdown" to illustrate blah, blah, blah (this is where I stopped listening and starting daydreaming in Rolling Stones.
I'm not on the verge of a breakdown either. But it's a catchy tune.

So my crochet swap buddy Kim and I just finally connected. She's having computer problems, I'm having procrastination problems. We have yet to decide what we're swapping, but she sounds really interesting, and I'm game for anything.

"You better stop
Look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown..."
Ugh, I need to go find that CD so I can just get it out of my head.
